Descriptions
Influenced by
artists such as Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Cornell first started
producing surreal collages in the 1930's. But in the 1940's began what is
referred to as the 'Medici slot machines' series. His borrowed Renaissance
images of young prince and princess's, together with contemporary objects
and iconography comfortably inhabit the space given to them by Cornell. I
consider Cornell's 'Medici slot machine' series to be his major work and intend
to examine three of these box constructions.
