Jansson drew heavily on his photographic studies of young men working out in gymnasiums or swimming nude in the military baths. Like his contemporary Eakins, Jansson was also photographed in the nude with his models, and his work features contemporary versions of classical ideals. His lover appears in many of the photos and paintings, this painting (Shown opposite) being one of the most tender.
